A Louisiana mother whose husband serves in the military came up with a way to help kids cope with an absent parent. "In 2005, my husband was deployed overseas and my son, who was four years old at the time, was going through a hard time and really having a rough time dealing with it," says DaLonna Rimsky, founder of Color The Memories. Mrs. Rimsky stumbled upon the idea of turning a few photos of her husband into art, adding a little color to her son Colin's life. "I thought, wow, this could be a coloring book. I could make coloring pages out of these pictures. I thought maybe that could help." And sure enough it did. By holding onto a marker, the kids could hold onto the memories of their father. "It made me feel like my daddy wasn't so far away after all," says Colin Rimsky. Mrs. Rimsky hopes her idea will help others kids through their loneliness, the same way it helped Colin and his sister, Paige. "It gives them control in an out of control situation." Mrs. Rimsky launched her business earlier this month, giving other parents the same opportunity to help their kids. The photo coloring books don't just help kids with parents serving overseas. They can also help children cope with any long distance relationship, like grandparents who live far away or divorced parents.
